Case study institutional profile templateSection 1: Institutional Profile
Institution’s Name: University of Suffolk
Type of Institution: Teaching and research
Section 2: Open and Responsible Research Assessment – Current Strategic Activity
The University of Suffolk is delighted to be participating in OR4 as a case study institution. We will share information about our own progress, provide input and feedback on project tools and resources, and share good practice and experience through the wider community of practice. We aim to recognise open science as a good research practice that can enhance the university profile and its research impact, by widening participation and outreach of research, promoting a sense of civic responsibility among academic staff. The scholarly activities include the production of books, contributions to books, articles, and conference papers, and is to be construed in the light of the common understanding of the phrase in higher education. In our approach, we aim at recognising open practices beyond open access publishing, including open data, open-source code and software production, recognition of pre-prints and leadership in citizen science programmes, as well as the production of open educational resources and engagement in open educational practices for capacity building in Open and responsible research practices in line with the UNESCO recommendations for Open Educational Resources and Open Science.
Section 3: Open and Responsible Research Assessment – Planned Activity
We will establish a working group that will include a diverse range of champions from our four Schools and our Research Institutes and centres. The group will be encompassing roles from Early Career Researchers to established Academics. They will promote and expand understanding of open research and open science practices across the Institution. This will involve designing training modules on topics such as open licensing, open science standards, FAIR data management, data ethics, and the responsible use and creation of open data in research. Furthermore, these champions will help develop a series of educational workshops and demonstrate open research practices. Their work will be designed to enhance open research rewards and recognition strategies in the Suffolk Academic Framework.
