Sensitive data sharing (online)

Content overview

This Train-the-Trainer half day ‘bolt on’ for sensitive data will build on the prerequisite course ‘Data Sharing: From Planning to Publishing.’ It will provide condensed training in the key considerations of sensitive data, and give attendees time and support from sensitive data experts to develop a minimum of one content block on a specific area. This can be added to workshops developed in the prerequisite course. This content may also be used as the starting point for developing stand alone training on handling and sharing sensitive data.

Content will include the delivery of two individual sessions of training about research data management viewed through a sensitive data lens, such as planning projects, consent forms, collecting, storing and sharing data. Attendees will be encouraged to reflectively engage with the content, and have opportunities to share their own examples to understand and contextualise the content. Through a mix of training, reflection, and shared experience attendees will design their own training appropriate to the specific needs of their audience – whether they are people with specialist knowledge within a project or school, or whether they are delivering more broadly to all university researchers. Attendees will be able to test the delivery of their content block in small groups and receive feedback from peers and workshop organisers.

Learning objectives

  • Have a solid understanding of considerations specific to sensitive data contexts, so this is interwoven throughout the courses developed by attendees, including data management plans, consent procedures, collecting, storing and sharing data.
  • Develop knowledge and skills to apply participatory exercises that help researchers contextualise good research data management principles when working with sensitive data.
  • Develop reflective practices to improve their understanding and skills in planning research training and design.
  • Design a sensitive data content block to add to training developed for their own audiences.

    Completion criteria

Useful for those involved in research where data concerns human participants – e.g. surveys, interviews, focus groups, etc. and for those involved in ethical review.

      Audience

Anyone welcome, but especially useful for those involved in research where data concerns human participants – e.g. surveys, interviews, focus groups, etc. and for those involved in ethical review.
