Nottingham Trent (NTU) Case Study Profile
Case study institutional profile templateSection 1: Institutional Profile
Institution’s name: Nottingham Trent University (NTU)
Type of institution: Teaching intensive, research inclusive
Section 2: Open and Responsible Research Assessment – Current Strategic Activity
NTU operates an institutional output review process, which underpins the review of outputs produced by researchers employed at NTU and applies equally to all forms of outputs, irrespective of mode or place of publication. One of the guiding principles of the process is transparency, where assessment criteria and potential uses of output rating data are communicated to staff and their use agreed with the reviewers.. The process is based on peer-reviewed, with metrics only used in a supplementary manner in disciplines where their use is accepted practice. Outcomes of assessments can be used for numerous processes, including promotions, appraisals and in preparation for REF 2029.
In Autumn 2023 Nottingham Trent University joined the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) and endorsed the Coalition’s Agreement on Reforming Research Assessment. These two actions acted as a stimulus to review institutional approaches to the assessment of research and researchers with a view to enhancing options for the full spectrum of research and research-related activity, including open research practices, to be recognized and rewarded. The review process has concluded, and recommended actions are in the process of being proposed.
Section 3: Open and Responsible Research Assessment – Planned Activity
NTU has produced a CoARA action plan, which includes the action described above. Actions in the plan will be implemented and the plan itself will be published on NTU’s website.
