Approaches to Open Access for Under-represented Research Outputs

Content overview

Open access (OA) aims to make research outputs freely available to the public, breaking down barriers to access. However, some types of research outputs—like negative results, replication studies, datasets, conference presentations, software, and practice-research portfolios—are often under-represented in traditional academic publishing. These outputs are critical for advancing knowledge but the route to open dissemination of these is not always straightforward and there are multiple options open to individuals.

We are offering an exploratory training session which will support trainers to return to their institutions and departments with the tools to promote the open dissemination of research outputs.

Training type

This is a train-the-trainer course.  It contains a section on pedagogy to assist you in developing your own local training.

Learning objectives

  • Identify the routes to Open Access in Under-represented Outputs
  • Supported guidance to develop understanding in making outputs open access
  • Develop a short presentation on supporting individuals to find their way in making their outputs Open Access.

 Completion criteria

During the session, researchers will be supported to develop content blocks for use within their own institution which will indicate completion of the course, therefore attendance is sufficient for course completion.

      Audience

      • researchers who have an interest in supporting others to make their under-represented research outputs open access.
      • professional services staff who train research staff and develop guidance.
      • research support staff who train research staff and develop protocols.

      Level (Introduction, intermediate, advanced)

Intermediate: it requires a knowledge of research outputs in the field

      Prerequisite skills, expertise and experience

Prior experience in either developing, or supporting others to develop, research outputs is necessary, therefore it is suggested that this course is an intermediate one. It is also desirable for attendees to have a basic knowledge of open research.

      Overall likely time commitment

The session will be a whole day session that covers the open access content with a session to support you in delivering training in your institution. You will then be expected to curate your content for delivery at your institution outside of those hours.

        Event date and time

[tbc] 09.00-17.00 (online). A follow up session will be scheduled for trainers to attend if they feel it would be helpful.
