Earlier this week we released UKRN Working Paper 7, which details some of the issues in conducting research with vulnerable communities and makes a number of recommendations. These include support for research co-production methods (see the UKRN primer on community engagement in research) and for open qualitative research.
Qualitative research has often been overshadowed by the more dominant STEM model in open research, where concepts, practices, and even language frequently align with quantitative methodologies. Yet, qualitative research has unique insights about transparency that could benefit the broader scientific community, as we found in discussions with arts practice and psychology researchers, documented earlier this year in Working Paper 6.
To support qualitative researchers in embracing open practices, we are releasing a new resource today, a Primer on Open Qualitative Research Practices. This guide outlines key open research principles and demonstrates how they can be applied in qualitative research, offering practical strategies for transparency and rigour.
These resources are now available to help qualitative researchers contribute to the growing movement of openness in academia.
