Overview:

Reporting guidelines aim to help authors in preparing journal articles by listing the minimum information needed about a particular study design in order for the results to be replicated or used. Many journals, particularly in biomedical research, require reporting guideline use and the submission of a completed checklist alongside a manuscript.

The first hour of this session is an interactive introduction to reporting guidelines. We’ll cover what reporting guidelines are, why they are needed, how to choose an appropriate reporting guideline, and how to use reporting guidelines in writing, editing, and peer review. We’ll put our learning into practice by analysing an abstract using a reporting guideline. The final 30min/hour [depending on the time you’d like this to take] will be spent on Q&A, discussion, and identifying appropriate reporting guidelines for participants.

Learning objectives:

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

1. Choose an appropriate reporting guideline or extension for a particular study or article
2. Use a reporting guideline to plan and outline a potential manuscript
3. Use a reporting guideline to check whether an article includes the detail necessary to understand, judge, and use it

The session will be presented by academic writing experts and reporting guideline developers from the UK EQUATOR Centre.
